Hinged vs Sliding Wardrobe Doors: Which Is Better?

Updated: Sep 23

New wardrobes can be a game changer for your bedroom - and if you’re having them custom-built, there’s even more potential for space-saving and personal style.

Often, the first thing people think about is the internal layout. They are hanging space, drawers, and concealed cupboards to store valuables because, for the most part, optimising storage is the main driving factor behind having custom-fit wardrobes.

But the wardrobe doors you opt for are usually a close second on the list of considerations.

The doors are more than a functional aspect of your new furniture. They dictate the outward style and can set the tone for the rest of your room. So, the subject deserves some serious thought. Sliding wardrobe doors or standard ones? Mirrored or wood?

Find out which wardrobe doors are best for you…

To Hinge Or Not To Hinge

In case you’re not familiar with the types of wardrobe doors, let’s take a quick look at each.

Hinged Wardrobe Doors

If you weren’t familiar with a standard door, we’d be worried. Solid, hinged on one side, and swings outwards to open and shut. In terms of a wardrobe, they can be made of wood, glass, or high-gloss acrylic-coated particleboard, with a whole host of design options.

Sliding Wardrobe Doors

Sliding doors are solid, but rather than being attached down one side, they sit within a track that runs along the top and bottom of your wardrobe. The doors are positioned so that they can pass by one another, making access very easy. Sliding wardrobe doors are often made from wood, glass, or high-gloss acrylic-coated particleboard.

Bi-folding Wardrobe Doors

Bi-folding doors are a kind of hybrid of the other two. The door panels are on tracks, but rather than sliding along and past each other, the door concertinas up. The doors are typically slimmer than standard doors, so although they protrude from the wardrobe, they take less space. Bi-folding doors aren’t as popular as the other two, but they certainly have their place.

Space

Now, the space your room has will play a significant role in the type of door you choose. Sliding doors don’t require any room for opening, so fit well in even the most compact bedroom.

Hinged doors, on the other hand, need ample space to swing open. As a rule of thumb, you need at least a metre between your wardrobe and any other furniture.

Access

How you use your wardrobe is your next consideration. If you share a room and plan to share the wardrobe space, you may need to think about your dressing routines. Do you dress at the same time? If so, sliding doors can be a bit of a pain - you’ll be passing them back and forth as you get your clothes out. Hinged doors mean you can both get what you need without having to wait your turn.

Location

Where you plan to have your wardrobes can have a bearing on the doors you go for. If you’re planning on having them in close proximity to your bed, then sliding doors will likely be the best option as they’ll maximise the space you have.

However, if your ceiling is angled or you want a corner wardrobe, standard hinged or bi-folding doors will be better.

Style

This one is the most important. Your preferred style will likely be what guides your choice. Do you love a more traditional aesthetic that grand hinged doors can give? Or the sleek, contemporary style that sliding doors do so well.

But it’s not just the way that they operate that comes into it; it’s what they’re made of and finished with that counts too. The warmth and calm that natural wood can bring to your space is undeniable, but some find it old fashioned and too traditional. And that’s where high-gloss vinyl and glass come in. Your wardrobe doors can be any colour, from cherry red to vibrant turquoise, giving you an abundance of creative freedom to make your bedroom a true reflection of your personality.

Luckily, whichever type of wardrobe door you choose, you have little restriction on the finish.

A New Lease Of Life

But it’s not just new wardrobes that can benefit from the style and elegance of sliding doors. At Living Dimensions, we also help to revive and bring new life to existing wardrobes by replacing the doors.

If you have old sliding door wardrobes that look tatty, aren’t running smoothly or just aren’t to your taste, one of the most cost-effective solutions is to replace the doors. We can fit new doors quickly and easily, transforming your room into something worthy of a magazine.

And that goes for standard doors too - if you have recently moved into a home or you’re planning a revamp, your wardrobe doors are an easy one to tick off the list.

So, Which Wardrobe Doors Are Better?

When it comes to whether sliding doors or standard doors are best, there’s no definitive answer because both have their strengths. What it really comes down to is what’s best for you and your home.

At Living Dimensions, we custom made wardrobes for our clients so they can enjoy fitted furniture that meets their functional needs, but that also reflects their personal taste. Our pieces are crafted by hand and built to last a lifetime, so you know that your investment is worthwhile.
